Silke Witzsch, an artist at the whiteBOX studio community since its very inception, departed this world on May 23, 2017 following a serious illness. whiteBOX has dedicated the homegrOWN series to her memory. This will see our very own "homegrowns" – the artists of the Werksviertel – present their own and others' works as they alternate between the roles of curator and/or artist in the whiteBOX Guest Studio. The series will kick off with the works of Silke Witzsch on August 1, the day on which the photo and video artist would have celebrated her 50th birthday.
Silke Witzsch's artistic output primarily focused on the issues of "boundaries" and "space". It deals with issues associated with "public" space – its frontiers and formative power over the individual, about the societal forces that come to the fore in the public arena. Witzsch's photo and video works address the issue of demarcation and control mechanisms at places of transit and passage, concentrating on the shifting of these mechanisms into the "private" and "alien". They illuminate the narrow boundary between the "nothing" and the "something", depicting visible and invisible frontiers both on the inside and outside.
