CORPS IN SITU IN CITY in Munich:

The French artist and dancer Aline Brugel will move into the whiteBOX Guest Studio in the Werksviertel in mid-July to begin her artist-in-residence tenure, which will continue until mid-October. She will photograph the protagonists of the Werksviertel for her temporary and transient poster project. Collaboration with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra is also in the planning. Her posters will not only be on show in the Werksviertel in September/October 2017, but will also be hung for all to see around Munich city centre. This art happening will culminate in mid-September with a whiteBOX exhibition dedicated to "Body & Urban Space", curated by Cagla Ilk.

Aline Brugel is a visual artist, dancer and stage designer. She is the founder and photographer of this street-art project. CORPS IN SITU IN CITY shows life-size pictures of people in boxes, seemingly slid into the walls of city buildings. In 2011, Aline Brugel teamed up with six dancers from the "C’est par où la danse?" collective, and together they launched the project. CORPS IN SITU IN CITY involves one city, 15 – 20 spaces, 80 – 160 participants and 30 – 60 photographs and posters. Not forgetting hundreds of stories and memories.

As dancers, the artists from CORPS IN SITU IN CITY sense how the respective environment can impact on the physique of people, the way they move and the way they are. The collective around Aline Brugel uses bodies as tools in order to draw attention to a particular space for a fleeting moment. It is often the case that people don't realise where they are as they wander from one place to the next. This is where CORPS IN SITU IN CITY comes into play. The project aims to demonstrate how our environment impacts on us and, vice versa, how we can impact on the environment around us – if we are creative. Art on walls and facades, or in fake niches and cavities on buildings, leads to the emergence of illusions. Passers-by then suddenly rediscover their local district's architecture, or the buildings that line their daily route, and therefore become part of the creative process. Elements of the urban landscape, such as windowsills, steps or jutties, surprise us with new potential to play in one's own city. CORPS IN SITU IN CITY therefore invites participants and city residents to play along with the project and leave their own personal footprints.

Following in the footsteps of Rennes/France and Melbourne/Australia, Brugel is now about to bring her project to Germany for the first time. whiteBOX is therefore eager to photograph the protagonists of the new Werksviertel district, thereby forging a link between the past, present and future of the area.

The project will run in conjunction with the "Body & Space" series of events at whiteBOX. Inspired by the rapidly evolving Werksviertel district which it calls home, whiteBOX has designed various projects to investigate the relationship between people and space – both in an individual and societal context – while simultaneously exploring the ins and outs of personal and collective creative freedom, boundaries and crossing the line. 

The CORPS IN SITU IN CITY project will be continually documented on the whiteBOX social media platforms, beginning in August 2017.
