Modern nostalgia is a mourning for the impossibility of mythical return, for the loss of an enchanted world with clear borders and values; it could be a secular expression of a spiritual longing, a nostalgia for an absolute, a home that is both physical and spiritual, the edenic unity of time and space before entry into history.
Svetlana Boym, The Future of Nostalgia

This exhibition is expressly born out of open conversations between Çağla İlk and Misal Adnan Yıldız, the new directors of the Kunsthalle Baden Baden. Especially during their long train sessions between Berlin and South Germany, they discussed the current transitions in the public domain, living and working with abnormality, missing heimat, and the feeling of nostalgia during the Corona times.

In this project, the curator duo departs from their pre-Internet memories, relating them to new urban investigations which link the visitors to nostalgia, collective memory, regenerated communities, and new publics.

Upon the recent urban developments of the “Werksviertel Munich Ostbahnhof,” they take  advantage of the location of White Box, and the potential politics it brings through inviting specific works. The exhibition methodology borrows the title from an outstanding book by a leading academic voice: Svetlana Boym’s The Future of Nostalgia (2002). The curator duo quote her questions for their imaginative tour speculating on what Walter Benjamin calls “porosity” in creating, maintaining, and evaluating the vitality of the urban spaces: “Can one be nostalgic for the home one never had? Why is it that the age of globalization is accompanied by a no less global epidemic of nostalgia? Can we know what we are nostalgic for?”

The exhibition is also one of the first projects of which İlk and Yıldız share collective authorship, including critical questions on how to bring different disciplines, methods, and forms of artistic knowledge and experience together.

As another layer for juxtaposing the works of Boym and Benjamin within this exhibition context, in a brief passage from Invisible Cities, Italo Calvino invokes the city as an archive: “The city does not tell its past,” he writes, “but contains it like the lines of a hand, written in the corners of the streets, the gratings of the windows, the banisters of the steps, the antennae of the lightning rods, the poles of the flags, every segment marked in turn with scratches, indentations, scrolls.”
