The 160 m2 "Guest Studio" on the third floor at whiteBOX has primarily been rented out for private functions and special events up to now. But the room is now about to finally be used for its original purpose: From February 20 – March 20 and from June 6 - June 28, all in all five artists from Bangalore in the Indian state of Karnataka will visit whiteBOX as Artists in Residence. Going by the title "Double Road", this project was initiated and supported by a group of Munich-based artists who, in years gone by, have themselves been invited to participate in an artist residency programme by the Goethe Institute / Max Mueller Bhavan, Bangalore.

This artistic exchange with the high-tech metropolis of Bangalore is the fruit of the long-existing, amicable sense of collaboration between the following artists from Munich, and which grew and evolved over the course of their bangaloREsidency at the Goethe Institute / Max Mueller Bhavan, Bangalore: Christian Engelmann, Beate Engl, Maximilian Erbacher, Fabian Hesse, Hermann Hiller and Ralf Homann. Engelmann and Engl are both members of the whiteBOX studio collective in the Werksviertel, and it was they who proposed the placement of five of the six guest artists at the whiteBOX Guest Studio.

After Sridhar Gangolli and Suresh Kumar, four other artists will make a guest appearance in Munich during June and July – the artist and curator Suresh Jayaram, the sculptor Navin Thomas and the multimedia artist Yashas Shetti. The six bangaloREsidency alumni from Munich became familiar with the selected guest artists on the ground in India.

The "Double Road" project will reach its highpoint in the summer with an exhibition curated by the Munich-based initiators. This will be opened on June 28, 2017 at the three exhibition rooms in Munich simultaneously. "Double Road" is also a pilot project to mark the tenth anniversary of the economic partnership between the Free State of Bavaria and the Indian state of Karnataka. The goal of this ambitious project is to create an atmosphere of sustainable collaboration between the visual artists of both cities.

A who's who of the "Double Road" residents at whiteBOX

Navin Thomas
Navin Thomas’s highly complex multimedia sculptures and installations bear all the hallmarks of his passion for hunting down flea-market treasures, along with his conflicted views about music, sound and film, as well as his artistic exploration of the impact of ecology and technology on the human individual. He last exhibited at the Institute for Contemporary Art in Singapore and was also part of a joint exhibition at the Beirut Exhibition Center in 2015. Thomas's work was featured at the 2014 Kochi-Muziris Biennale. He was awarded the renowned Skoda Prize for Indian Contemporary Art in 2011. Born in Chennai in 1974, he studied graphic design and cinematography at the Karnataka Film and Technical Training Centre in Bangalore. He lives and works in Bangalore, India.

Suresh Jayaram
Suresh Jayaram is a visual artist, art historian and curator from Bangalore, India. He is the founder, head and director of "1 Shanthiroad", an independent centre for visual art in Bangalore – a venue for art events with international artist residency programmes, and a meeting point for artists and people involved in the cultural sector from all corners of the globe.
As evidenced by his creative output down through the years, he has a great passion for inner-city gardens, their history, development and future. Exciting parallels between Bangalore, the city of trees, and Munich, the city with the largest urban park in the world, are more than inevitable.
